S (Scripture): John 14:15 [Jesus said to his disciples] “If you love me, you will obey my commandments. 16 Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever – 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he resides with you and will be in you….”
O (Observation): Jesus is promising to his disciples that he will give the gift of the Holy Spirit to them. The Spirit will be another advocate, which tells me that Jesus was the first advocate. The Spirit will prompt, guide, and inspire all disciples, just as Jesus did with the 12 (and all others who followed him).
They would not be abandoned. God would still be with them in another form.
A (Application): Pentecost! This is the promise of Pentecost, and Pentecost is the fulfillment of God bursting forth onto the scene in a new way!!!
No longer would people feel the need to rely on a priest or pastor, but each is filled with the Spirit, is authorized and empowered to serve the world on God’s behalf.
Today, almost a week after the presidential election, know that God invites you to realize that The Spirt is with you and encourages you to live out your faith in positive and constructive ways. Discuss issues, don’t just name-call. Engage in conversation with people you trust. Let us speak well of one another and let us be prepared to stand with those who feel afraid this day. Let us shake off the need to prove ourselves right through destructive means (physical, emotional, or otherwise).
Let us pray, for our leaders, for our communities, for our hopes and dreams….
P (Prayer): Lord, we are filled with angst and are worn out. Fill us with hope and joy and peace this day. Help our communities and families respond to the presidential election with hope and renewsed vigor to call out injustices and provide constructive ways forward. Amen.
