S (Scripture): Isaiah 65:17 “For look, I am ready to create new heavens and a new earth! The former ones will not be remembered; no one will think about them anymore.
18 But be happy and rejoice forevermore over what I am about to create! For look, I am ready to create Jerusalem to be a source of joy, and her people to be a source of happiness.
19 Jerusalem will bring me joy, and my people will bring me happiness. The sound of weeping or cries of sorrow will never be heard in her again.
25 A wolf and a lamb will graze together; a lion, like an ox, will eat straw, and a snake’s food will be dirt. They will no longer injure or destroy on my entire royal mountain,” says the Lord.
O (Observation): Only God, through divine intervention and holy splendor, can make things new. This hope was spoken to God’s people in a time when they were scattered by the power of the Babylonian empire.
Anger, frustration, sadness, fighting…all elements of life as God’s people at the time. They were without hope and joy.
Yet God can make all things new. That is God’s promise in today’s text.
A (Application): Police brutality. Racism. Homophobism. Ageism. The list goes on and on. Rise of the “nones.” School / theater / church shootings.
Yet…hope still remains. Hope is our eternal gift from God. That is the faith that God has swept me up into.
A new thing. From God. That is my hope. My joy.
How about you? Share with me your hopes…
P (Prayer): Lord, life can be overwhelming. Life is a struggle. Help us to see that while imperfection exists, and you have made us new through Christ, that we will come to a day, such as you have promised through your prophet Isaiah. Amen.
